EUROPE IN MOTION is a project of video recordings of people on escalators, started in 2000. Recordings have been made in countries that felt, in the second half of the twentieth century until the revolution in 1989, under the influence of the former communist Soviet Union and wanted to qualify for the membership of the European Union (EU). To join the EU, these young democracies had to meet the Copenhagen criteria, including having a stable democracy, having a well-functioning market economy and adopting EU laws and regulations. This project is an attempt to visualize the effects of social change upon the inhabitants of the future EU Member States.
As a metaphor for a country in motion the escalator was chosen, located in a shopping centre in the capital of the future EU country. For comparison video recordings were made of residents on an escalator in other already existing Member States. The hypothesis is that transformation towards westernisation might be visible upon the people in the former Eastern bloc countries.
Each scene takes one hour exactly, depending on the local circumstances. The descent of the people on the escalator is recorded visibly to everyone, under surveillance and with the permission of the authorities.
